A reverse osmosis system is one of the simplest ways to improve the taste and quality of drinking water at the kitchen tap, but it is not a fit-and-forget appliance. This guide to reverse osmosis maintenance explains what needs changing, when to do it and how to spot problems before they affect your water supply. A little routine care protects your investment, keeps water flowing properly and helps avoid paying for preventable repairs.

Why reverse osmosis maintenance matters

An RO system works by pushing water through several filters and a semi-permeable membrane. Each stage has a job: pre-filters catch sediment and reduce chlorine, the membrane removes a wide range of dissolved contaminants, and a post-filter improves taste before the water reaches the tap.

Over time, those filters collect sediment and the membrane becomes less effective. Leaving them in place too long can reduce water flow, affect taste and put extra strain on the membrane. In areas with hard water, poor pre-filter maintenance can be particularly costly because scale and sediment can shorten membrane life.

The good news is that most domestic systems are straightforward to maintain. You do not need specialist knowledge, but you do need the correct replacement parts, a clean working area and a regular schedule.

Your reverse osmosis maintenance schedule

The right replacement interval depends on your water quality, household use and the specification of your system. A large family will use filters faster than a one-person household, for example. If your incoming water is very hard, high in sediment or heavily chlorinated, filters may also need attention sooner.

As a practical starting point, follow the schedule below and always check the instructions supplied with your particular RO unit.

  • Sediment pre-filter: usually every 6 to 12 months.
  • Carbon pre-filter: usually every 6 to 12 months.
  • RO membrane: commonly every 2 to 3 years.
  • Carbon post-filter: commonly every 12 months.
  • System sanitisation: at least once a year, ideally when replacing filters.
Some systems use combined filter cartridges or quick-change cartridges, so the number of components and intervals can vary. A system with a membrane flushing valve may also give the membrane a longer working life, but it does not remove the need for regular filter changes.

A simple approach is to write the installation date on each cartridge with a permanent marker. Set a reminder on your phone for the next service date. It takes less than a minute and avoids trying to remember when the last change was made.

Signs your filters or membrane need attention

Calendar-based servicing is useful, but the system will often tell you when something is not right. The most common sign is slower water production. RO systems are naturally slower than standard filters, yet a clear drop in flow from the dedicated drinking-water tap can indicate blocked pre-filters, a tired membrane, low water pressure or a problem with the storage tank.

Taste and smell are also useful clues. Water that tastes flat, unusual or slightly chlorinated may mean the carbon filters are exhausted. If the water has a noticeable odour, stop using it for drinking until you have checked the system and changed the relevant filters.

Other warning signs include water leaking from a filter housing, a constantly running drain line, cloudy water that does not clear, or a storage tank that takes much longer than normal to fill. A leak needs prompt attention. A small drip can become a damaged kitchen unit, wasted water and a larger repair bill.

If you use a TDS meter, compare readings from the RO water with readings from your incoming tap water. TDS means total dissolved solids. It is a useful performance check, although it is not a complete water-quality test. A rising RO reading can suggest that the membrane is becoming less effective, especially if it is well outside the normal performance level for your system.

How to change reverse osmosis filters safely

Before starting, check that you have the correct cartridges, a filter housing spanner if your system uses screw-on housings, a clean cloth or towel and a shallow bowl for any trapped water. Wash your hands and clear space beneath the unit. Most RO systems sit under the sink, where it is easy to knock pipes or overlook a small leak.

First, turn off the cold-water feed to the RO system. Then close the valve on the storage tank. Open the drinking-water tap to release pressure from the system. Water may continue to trickle for a short time, which is normal.

For traditional housings, place a bowl underneath, unscrew the housing carefully and remove the old filter. Empty the water, wipe the housing clean and inspect the O-ring seal. If the O-ring looks flattened, cracked or damaged, replace it. A light coating of food-safe silicone grease can help the seal sit correctly, but do not use petroleum-based products.

Fit the new filter in the correct position and screw the housing back on by hand. Tighten only enough to create a seal. Over-tightening can damage threads or make the next service unnecessarily difficult. Quick-change filters are even simpler: twist or release the old cartridge as directed, then fit the new one firmly.

Repeat the process for each pre-filter and post-filter. If you are replacing the membrane, follow the system instructions carefully. The membrane normally sits in its own long housing and must be installed in the correct direction. Push it fully home so the internal seals engage properly.

Once everything is fitted, reopen the incoming water supply slowly. Check every connection and housing for drips. Then open the storage tank valve. Leave the drinking-water tap closed while the tank fills.

New carbon filters and membranes need flushing before normal use. The exact process varies, but it usually means allowing the system to produce water and then discarding one or more full tanks. This clears carbon fines and the membrane preservative solution. Do not skip this stage simply because the water looks clear.

Sanitise the system during annual servicing

Changing filters removes old media, but sanitising cleans the empty housings, lines and tank connection. This is especially worthwhile if the system has been unused for a period, if you have noticed an unpleasant taste or if it is due for its annual service.

Use a sanitising product that is suitable for drinking-water systems and follow its dilution instructions exactly. Never mix cleaning products or use household cleaners that can leave unsafe residues. With the old filters removed, sanitise the relevant housings and system as directed, rinse thoroughly, then fit the new cartridges.

If you are unsure how to sanitise a particular model, do not guess. The layout of valves, housings and membrane connections differs between systems. Checking the product manual or speaking to after-sales support is safer than risking damage to a membrane or contaminating the system.

Protect the membrane and reduce running costs

The membrane is usually the most expensive consumable in an RO system, so looking after it makes financial sense. Replace sediment and carbon pre-filters on time. The sediment filter prevents particles from fouling the membrane, while the carbon filter reduces chlorine, which can damage many standard RO membranes.

Incoming water pressure also matters. Very low pressure can make an RO system painfully slow, while pressure that is too high may require a pressure-reducing valve. If you are on a private supply, have unusually high sediment levels or notice frequent filter blockage, a more suitable pre-treatment set-up may be worthwhile.

Hard water can create extra scale risk. A correctly sized water softener before the RO system can help reduce that burden, particularly where the RO unit is protecting drinking water in a home with known hard-water issues. It is not necessary in every installation, but it can be a sensible long-term option where limescale is persistent.

Also check the drain connection occasionally. RO systems send rejected water to drain as part of the purification process. A blocked or kinked drain line can affect performance, while a constantly running system may indicate a shut-off valve, tank pressure or membrane issue.

Common RO maintenance mistakes to avoid

The biggest mistake is waiting until the water tastes bad before changing filters. By then, the pre-filters may have been underperforming for some time. Scheduled replacement is cheaper and more reliable.

Another common issue is fitting cartridges in the wrong order. Take a quick photo of the system before opening it, especially if several housings look similar. Keep replacement filters in their sealed packaging until you are ready to install them, and avoid touching filter ends or internal fittings with unclean hands.

Do not ignore a slow leak after servicing. Turn the water off, release the pressure and check the O-ring position, housing threads and pipe connections. Most post-service leaks are caused by a displaced seal, a cross-threaded housing or a connection that has not been pushed fully into place.

Finally, do not use an RO system that has been left dormant for many months without servicing it first. Replace filters as needed, sanitise the system and flush it properly before returning it to drinking-water use.

A well-maintained RO unit should quietly do its job in the background: giving you better-tasting water, reducing reliance on bottled water and keeping replacement costs predictable. Keep a small set of compatible filters ready before service day, and maintenance becomes a straightforward household task rather than an urgent under-sink problem.
